Greater Houston & the East Side
Living in Houston
The fourth-largest city in the country, and still really a collection of neighborhoods, each with its own welcome.
Houston is the anchor of everything we do: a big, diverse, ambitious city with a job engine that draws families from across the country and the world. What surprises most new residents is how neighborhood-based life feels here. One family spends its weekends paddling Buffalo Bayou; another swears by a corner taqueria, a museum membership, and festival season. Both are right, and both are Houston.
Inside Houston
What neighborhoods make up Houston?
Every community here is really a handful of neighborhoods with their own personality. Here is the short tour, the way I would give it in the car.
The Heights
Historic tree-lined streets, Victorians and bungalows, and a walkable shopping and dining stretch along 19th Street.
Museum District & Rice Village
Parks, world-class museums, and a charming village of shops and restaurants, popular with families who want culture at the doorstep.
Oak Forest & Garden Oaks
Quiet, established single-family neighborhoods close to downtown with a friendly, owner-occupied feel.
Greater East End
One of the city's oldest areas, near the Port of Houston, rich in history and full of growing dining and park space.
Energy Corridor
West Houston's office belt along I-10, with homes, trails, and easy access to the region's energy employers.
Memorial & the west side
Established, leafy neighborhoods with strong zoned schools, minutes from the Galleria and Uptown.
Getting around
What is the commute really like?
Houston is the hub, so the commute depends entirely on where you live and where you work: the city is laced with I-10, I-45, U.S. 59/I-69, Loop 610, the Beltway, and the Grand Parkway. Living inside the Loop means short hops to downtown, the Texas Medical Center, and Uptown; living in the suburbs means an easy highway run on most days, with traffic flowing opposite the rush in several directions. Two international airports, Bush Intercontinental and Hobby, put the world within reach.
Schools
Which schools serve Houston?
Houston ISD serves most of the city, with a wide range of neighborhood schools, magnet programs, and choice options, while many families also weigh charter, private, and parochial schools. Around the edges of the city, homes are zoned to well-regarded suburban districts such as Spring Branch ISD, Alief ISD, and Katy ISD farther out. Your address decides the district, and that is a conversation I love to have early.
Daily life
What is daily life like in Houston?
There is always something to do: Memorial Park and Buffalo Bayou Park for running, paddling, and picnics; the Museum District and the Theater District for culture; professional sports year-round; and a dining scene that is one of the most exciting in the country, from food trucks to James Beard names. Add festivals, farmers markets, and a genuinely diverse international community, and Houston rewards curiosity for years.
The honest part: no neighborhood is perfect for everyone. The parks, the commute, the schools, the pace, all of it deserves a real conversation, in English or Spanish, at whatever pace you need.
