Gulf Coast & Galveston County
Living in La Marque
The Gateway to the Gulf: quiet family streets, Highland Bayou charm, and a four-mile drive to the Island beaches.
La Marque sits four miles north of Galveston Island on the main road south, and it has long carried the nickname Gateway to the Gulf, with good reason: quiet family neighborhoods, bayou-front living along Highland Bayou, and a calm, proud, unhurried Gulf Coast pace. It is a tight-knit town where neighbors know neighbors, the Mall of the Mainland keeps errands short, and the beaches are minutes from the front door.
Inside La Marque
What neighborhoods make up La Marque?
Every community here is really a handful of neighborhoods with their own personality. Here is the short tour, the way I would give it in the car.
Omega Bay
A canal-front boating community where many homes come with private docks in the backyard, a water lover's favorite.
Delany Cove
A master-planned community built out since 2006, with newer homes and amenities that have put the town on buyers' lists.
Historic Highland & traditional blocks
The older heart of town, with classic homes and tree-lined streets near the city center.
Family pockets & newer subdivisions
Quiet residential streets with space, value, and room for kids to ride bikes.
Getting around
What is the commute really like?
La Marque sits on I-45 between Houston and the Island: Galveston beaches about 15 minutes south, Texas City's workplaces and the Dike 5 to 10 minutes away, League City's southern edge about 15, and downtown Houston roughly 40 to 50 minutes on a typical day. It is on the main commute line for the island, the city, and the hospitals, so the drive to anywhere along the Gulf is the easy part.
Schools
Which schools serve La Marque?
Texas City ISD has served La Marque's public schools since 2016, when the former La Marque district was annexed into Texas City ISD, so neighborhood schools from elementary through high school are part of one stable mainland district. The exact zoned campus depends on the street, and I always confirm boundaries before we start looking at homes, especially for families weighing island versus mainland districts.
Daily life
What is daily life like in La Marque?
Highland Bayou brings fishing, kayaking, and bayou-front decks that make every evening feel like a mini-vacation. The Mall of the Mainland anchors shopping errands, local seafood spots feed the community, and events like the annual Bayou Fest and the Christmas Parade keep the calendar full of small-town magic. Galveston Island's beaches, the Strand, and the Pleasure Pier are minutes away: La Marque is proof that Gulf Coast living does not have to carry an island price tag.
The honest part: no neighborhood is perfect for everyone. The parks, the commute, the schools, the pace, all of it deserves a real conversation, in English or Spanish, at whatever pace you need.
